This eternal flame burns forever
in remembrance of Dorothy Matilda Leelman
Dorothy Matilda Leelman
August 11, 1922 - July 7, 2022
Dorothy Matilda Leelman,
age 99, passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2022.
On August 11, 1922, Dorothy Matilda Leelman was born on a farm in
Abercrombie, North Dakota. As the oldest
of nine children, she learned the
value of community and family that she carried
with her throughout her life.
First as a Lieutenant in the United States
Army during War World II where
she nursed injured GI's back to health.
And then later as a mother to two, a
grandmother of three, and a great-grandmother to
eight. Meeting her
husband at a USO dance in San Diego, Oscar Leelman, Dorothy and Oscar
lived all over the United States where she
continued to dance her way
through life. With a
sense of duty, she never stopped volunteering
for worthy causes.
Those that were lucky enough to know Dorothy, will
forever remember her
for iron spine, bright smile in the face of hardship, and of
course, her peanut
butter cookies. She was member of many organizations
such as the
independent order of the Oddfellows, The Rebekahs, The Good Sam Club,
and many others. Frequently seen
traveling with her husband and family in
their RV, Dorothy has the rare distinction
of visiting all 50 states and was
never without an open invitation for those
she cared for. She leaves behind
a legacy of kindness that was the example of a life well
lived to those that
loved her most,
including her little dogs that unfortunately liked to bite ankles.
Though She's gone, She is not forgotten.
Though absent, She remains in spirit.
Though once a worker, She now rests.
